Unfortunately, internally it was a mess. They had several versions of the engine floating around for each game that would diverge and be a pain to merge all together. Later on it got way better but it was too late, Unity and Unreal had taken over and CE had no chance of making money.

Tying the games to the engine allowed them to move fast but at the expense of a truly general purpose engine.
