Recently, I visited a great temporary exhibit at the Prado in Madrid called "On the Reverse", focused on the back sides of paintings. The works were grouped by sorta "backside interest" -- there was a room of paintings of the back sides of stretched canvases, another of canvases that had discarded / partial works on the back sides, etc.

One of the groups was of this style of painting, in which there was something proper (typically religious) on one side, and then something more creative / scandalous on the other.

Unfortunately, it looks like it closed a month ago.
