Wow! I of course knew that Lish heavily edited the story but I never looked at the changes: they are huge. Talk about the old adage about the statue being in the slab of marble, you just need to take out the unnecessary parts. Towards the end, he took out pages from a story that was not long to start with.

Many edits are well placed (for a guy deemed as a minimalist, Carver, sometimes took a while to get to the point! in his sentences) but what's with changing the names of the characters, e.g. Herb to Mel? I would have been mad about that.
