Four things everyone on HN should do for a bit in their life:

   - Work customer-facing food service
   - Donate plasma
   - Volunteer at a soup kitchen
   - Take a long-distance Greyhound
There's a lot of the world and people in it that it's easy to be oblivious to, and I think doing each of the above helped make me a kinder, more compassionate person.

Or as the article puts it...

And bored Greyhound bus stories are the best.

At least with sex work, you know if your customer is happy.
