Every time I downloaded freedos, I couldn't do anything once I started the box. There was no built-in software or demos. Just about every Linux distribution included one or many demos. The question is what do I use Freedos for? How do I use it well?

Also just needs a package manager

It has a package manager, if you use the bonus CD or full distribution.

IMO FreeDOS is useful for trying old games and running old apps. It can breath life into old or very limited hardware too. (DOS emulators can also play games, though not always as faithfully or as well.)
