Never heard of this product that vanished. But the article looks like an advertisement to sell another VPN service.
A quibble with the use of "Not with a bang but a whimper", traced back to T.S. Eliot's "The Hollow Men" poem; VPNArea suddenly disappearing seems to be more of a band than a whimper, where a whimper is a drawn-out death as these men of WWI are experiencing.
