As opposed to me not showing up at all for things I comment on. Guess I'm not knowledgeable enough.

The results are biased towards users with high post count. It doesn’t matter how knowledgeable you are about a topic, only how much you comment on it.
And using the correct keywords. SEO is dead, long live SEO!
Also I imagine that my area is pretty niche (not many people talking about documentation on HN) so I may have less competition
