I am currently watching Mr. Selfridge - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2310212/ - a drama about an American who established a department store in London during the Victorian era (I presume). And there's a scene in the first episode where a suggestion to display expensive gloves openly, and to allow the prospective customer to browse through it by themselves, is showcased as an unconventional and scandalous suggestion. Looks like we are coming back full circle to keep things locked up and inaccessible to potential customers again.
