I hate presents, I hate getting them (they're never what I want, or if they are, I was well aware they bought it at a poor price). I hate buying them even more because I just don't know what people like. If you know, buy it yourself, jeez.
This year I just stopped buying them, said to everyone: I don't want them. The gift I want from you is to not have to give you a gift, ok?
People don't like it, but I feel better. Man do I hate that tradition of gifts (for birthdays, for christmas, for Sinterklaas... always stress about stupid gifts... pffff, hate that process)
Perhaps you would appreciate if gifts were not a consumerist thing to be bought and gifted but more something someone made for you?
I bring this up because at some point in life I used to thing similarly to you but I found a group of friends and a partner who don't care much about the materialism of gifts and gift me various trinkets they've made themselves. Be it craft beer brewed by a friend, my partner learning pottery to make new plant pots for our many plants, another friend gifting me an amazing art piece of photos he took over the years of us, and quite a few other bespoke gifts.
I treasure each one of them, as easy as it'd be to go out and buy a new great looking plant pot I'd never replace one of the ones made by my partner.
Gifts with character, made by people you love, have a personal story, no money could buy that.
