This article doesn't tell you anything you haven't read in tens or hundreds of other "Death of MTV" articles, except possibly one thing: The Real World was the beginning of its death.
That was probably the rubicon, but cracks were in the wall somewhat before then. MTV was dabbling in non-music content with a show called Remote Control I faintly remember from the early 90's and I think I remember Kids in the Hall being played on MTV at one point at that time too.
Really though TV in general hasn't been relevant since the rise of YouTube and social media, and I don't know why anyone is surprised. I guess sports would be the number one reason why people still pay for cable.
