I think this is good advice. And for me at least this is often a platform-level decision. I find it impossible to avoid trolls and bad actors on X and Reddit, so I am not on those platforms at all. In fact, I am only on Bluesky and (newly) here right now. I like Bluesky because it is very good at allowing you to self-moderate with "muted words."
I rotate out reddit identity semi-annually. I don't want to get attached to karma, and I want to leave my more ridiculous positions behind. I imagine anyone who wanted to could track me no matter what. It's like the word "gelid" which is up in the one-in-10,000,000 word uses level (or do I mean down?) -if you see it twice its probably the same person.
I know I've told the same tiresome old-fart computing stories more than once, in different places, identities.
I just found my own HN comment from 2+ years ago the first match on search, for the correct spelling of somebody's name 30 years old topic against CHI contexts. When you hit your own words it's time to stop looking.
