I guess that's the pessimistic view, which I do admittedly have often. The optimistic view is that it has helped me figure out what ideas are NOT profitable, and how to quickly figure that out.

Is my statement false and it internet advice did help you create a profitable company? If it's a fact then does it matter pessimistic/optimistic.
So, basically you're asking for advice how to find more unprofitable ideas if the evidence you have shows that it helps with only that.
