Well, he's not wrong. Europe has been free-loading off the American military (as evidenced by their pathetic domestic military spending).

What the Americans seem to be missing, however, is that this dependence on America has also traditionally bound Europe - a MASSIVE economic power - to American interests. That's going to change now, and not in a way that America will like long-term.

The military costs were tiny compared to the preferential trade and geopolitical alignment.
