Ask HN: Why are startups suddenly branding themselves the "OS" for [thing]?

Because in reality, they don't have a no clue on what they are doing and they frequently compare themselves to Apple.
Apple - inventor of the App Store, the microkernel, and apparently the operating system too.

It feels more like they're both tapping into a common marketing vein of "professional-grade" tools that are developed to minimum-viable standards.

So startups tell them what they want to hear. When one gets funding everyone else copies the pitch.
