Horrible title. Let's try the subtitle:

"For the first time, physicists have directly measured the temperature of extremely hot gold particles using a giant X-ray laser—a breakthrough with major implications for engineering spacecraft or nuclear fusion reactors."

and cut the unnecessary parts...

"Physicists have measured the temperature of extremely hot gold particles using a giant X-ray laser."

If you see a horrible horrible title, you can send an email to dang/tomhow asking for a change hn@combinator.com . Bonus imaginary points for a good alternative candidate. Add the URL of the post to ensure they see the same post.

They don't like a very cherry picked sentence. The best options are a small variant of the title or the subtitle. Sometimes they agree and change it.

It's a manual process, so reserve it for horrible cases.
