Some of the reasons that executive organizations in the US that investigate safety concerns are so effective is that they are independent of the executive organization that creates regulations for the field (e.g. the NTSB is independent of the FAA and NHTSA and the CSB is independent of the EPA and OSHA) and their investigations focus on failings in organizational structure that allowed the event to occur, not the mistakes of individuals that were in a precarious position to start with.

It's also worth noting that while the Republican party itself is using this investigation to its advantage, it has bipartisan support. Rand Paul is rather independent from his party, as far as senators go, and it's not just Fox News supporting his investigation but The Young Turks too (https://youtu.be/BXIP6-8GHcE); two organizations that rarely agree on anything.

I'd love to see some kind of independent body to investigate the organizational failings of the FDA and NIH and release recommendations for changes based on those findings. Given the lack of such an organization, Rand Paul is is doing the best I would expect from a senator.

Your statement is a general one. But in this specific case, it seems like particular senator is using his personal vendetta and abusing his power with the help of secretary of health, and going after an individual, who has track record of over 40 years of serving in public health.
I find it interesting that this seems to be an exclusively American conservative phenomenon, and it probably has everything to do with Trumps vindictive nature. The rest of the world has already moved on. Nothing what Fauci did was really different from what other countries were doing and if he did anything wrong, it was doing too little too late.

I followed development of COVID when it happened in Asia, before it became mainstream in the west. Countries like Vietnam had contained the virus much better than western countries by faster and more decisive actions, which came from their experience with the SARS virus.

The biggest problem what I noticed is that Western countries see pandemics as personal health issue and not a collective problem. If you woke up from a coma and someone told you there was an over death of 1 million people, then that could only mean two things: war or a pandemic. Fighting a pandemic is more akin to fighting a war, than fighting obesity.

Probably because you don't follow local news. In Germany, the consequences of the COVID Pandemic restrictions still being discussed in the Parlament. The so called "Corona-Enquete-Kommission". I can imagine that other countries still do the same, specially when Law and Order was done following some premise that people are legally fighting against and in some cases winning.. it's a mess, but not an "American conservative phenomenon"

I find this wildly disturbing development. Releasing his personal dairy and public harassment using lies and mis-construed statements.
I find it wildly disturbing that a government official in his position would use his work computer to store private notes, that in some cases appear to directly contradict what he said in public about the same matters. It calls into question his entire thought process and judgement "in general" -- if he can't think through on separating his personal and work life, how could he be trusted to make judgements on what to do about COVID.
It would seem unwise to me if someone at the level of decision making didn't "war game" / write out thoughts from many perspectives to more fully understand something they are thinking about.

Agreed. According to a duly elected Senator, those injured by the vaccines are also committing mass-suicide. How is any of this acceptable?!
Because it is a lie, from a "duly elected senator" who is Ron Johnson: an election denier who handed a fake electors to Mike Pence, a 9/11 "truther", an alternative medicine quack who lies openly about vaccines and HCQ...
