One could obtain and run an old (Open) Genera image with a VLM port from archives or community distributions. What is announced here is that "Symbolics Technologies" is now formally offering Genera and the VLM under a free-for-non-commercial-use licence. But it's not open source as it seems.

Yes, unfortunately not open source. I tried Open Genera with the VLM port for Linux about ~8-10 years ago. The tutorials and the process got a lot better a few years laters. This should be an official way to run it (with all the associated additional first-party programs).
From an historical point of view it is interesting to see what “could have been” and what was lost.
