Something somewhere tells me when the moment comes all of those AI companies will try to play the Chewbacca Defense.
Of such excuses, I would hope that "it's so smart and humanoid that we can't be liable" immediately segues into "then isn't your relationship illegal slavery?"
Not because I think these systems are people, but because it's the kind of harsh rebuttal that's needed.
