Sorry about that. We wanted to implement more social features on the app to let users learn with their friends which we figured letting users find friends from their contacts/phone number. Understand that isn't for everyone and we might make some changes to make those social features opt-out.

Not about your app but every and I mean EVERY app implements these social features, and I don't know anyone in my circles actually USING whatever social features - even if we talk about our experiences with common apps. Are you sure you're not just investing programming effort into nothing?
We've seen some of the people on the app using the social features, but yea I think on some apps it doesn't get used. I think if no one ends up using these features we'll just remove them.
Your app asks people if they would like to upload their contacts? That’s a massive dark pattern. I was interested until now.
This is a totally skippable part of the onboarding. Sorry if this is off putting. I had just really enjoyed this part of other apps like Substack where I can see when people I know join and follow them. Totally understand if this is something you want to skip or don't find it appealing.
HN is an unrepresentative crowd. Don't focus too much on what people here hate/want, unless it's your target market. Very successful businesses have famously not found approval here.
The obvious rejoinder to this comment is don't self-post about your business on HN then, if you're going to ignore HN commentary as 'unrepresentative'
