I usually do my best work with music, street noise and chatter from the TV at the same time. The more variety, the better.

I also like a mix of different types of noise. I actually built a little site to mix ambient noises together [1].
That's what coffitivity suggests. The iPhone app even has a mixer to mix the ambient noise with your music.
