it's a shame that the blogger provided inadequate summary of the article. at the same time, i found this very upsetting:

"This begins with the realization that every American adult is responsible for his or her own health."

the assumption that every american adult has complete control over his life is false. i don't even believe that this is approximately true -- especially when health care is the issue at hand.

Even if it is false, how does that assumption relate to Mackey's statement?

Control and responsibility are two different things - there are plenty of things we have no control over, but does that mean we shouldn't be responsible for ourselves?
