I would take your product from concept through design (UML) through BSP and prototyping with soldering iron in hand and close coordination with hardware types, and thence to market, iterating as necessary. Design and code reviews.

>10 yrs in most of the above at startups, and at large ops. Usually new product development, often at the low level, fixing the concept in firmware. Pleasant (they say).
