Just use the PGP plugin for Gmail on Firefox. Then it doesn't matter who has access to your email so long as they don't have the private key.

The problem is that these aren't just lazy programs, they're unmonitored programs. Somebody needs to actually determine what the major users of the blocks are and tell the developers of those systems…
