Let me get this straight, you do not know how to set up version control, therefore knowing how to set up version control is useless? It's not hard to start a Git repo you know, it's something you can …

Are there any countries where doctors don't need to be certified??

How about straight up WASD? It is already a defacto standard anyway.

I am a software engineer at a rather large factory, handling assembly line robot software. My average day is remarkably similar to yours. I suspect that any software engineer working in a large compan…

Holy hell, this brings back awful memories of back when I was a software engineer working for a large consulting firm. The biggest problem with working in non-software companies is that, software engi…

To be honest, I slightly prefer HN's system of using the article's actual headline, as this demonstrates that HN is not trying to impose its opinion on articles. The complaint about uninformative head…

SSDs are still considered 'luxury' items, like $1000 graphics cards. Don't forget that a 60GB SSD costs roughly the same as a 1TB HDD, and people do like bigger numbers. People in the market for new P…

That...is a really loaded question. Like many people have mentioned, no one offered any proof that the "leaked" messages were actually private, rather than wall-to-wall posts that they assumed were …

I have to seriously disagree with the 1st point. Give me a usable website over one that "meets my expectations", dammit! As much as I like the desktop version of let's say www.theverge.com, I can hone…

It's interesting that once upon a time, he was being called a shill for big Pharma, thanks to his anti-quackery (read: anti-homeopathy) stance.

That website for Requests to me is a great example that you don't have to choose between being beautiful and being functional.

It boggles my mind that some kids will probably never get to see a clear, starry sky at night. I still remember the first time I saw a constellation. Back when I was a kid, I managed to make out Orion…

Get a mouse, preferably one with more mass in it. Helps to dampen some of the shakiness. My tremors are not that serious though, so I'm perfectly OK with a touchpad (I'm a huge fan of Apple's glass to…

As a guy with tremors, the trackpoint is even worse than a touchpad.

He's not the odd one. I did not experience any issues whatsoever with tapping on my trackpad. Not even with two-finger tapping for right clicks. Then again, I'm using a Macbook Air, which has a highly…

First of all, that $1k per hour was pulled out of my ass. That was my piss-poor attempt at using humour to point out that people tend to underestimate someone else's value just because we don't unders…

Somewhere, some lawyer is probably wondering why it costs $1000/hour to develop what she believes is just a simple website.

As a guy who lives in a tropical, humid area, bringing my laptop outdoors to work may not always be practical.

WhatsApp was there first. Network effects cemented their position. iMessage doesn't work for non-iOS phones. Annoyingly, GTalk doesn't have an official client on iOS. SMSes can get expensive.
comment
A large majority of whatsapp users use it as a straight-up replacement for normal SMS. It's easy to impersonate someone's account and pull off the whole "I am stuck please wire me money" scam.

Strange times we live in, when making an algorithm to calculate a random piece of trivia is no longer considered 'geeky' =)

Implementing an algorithm to determine an actor's Bacon number is about as nerdy as it gets =)
