Nah, as the other poster said 4 or 8 MB was what was common on 486 machines. Even less on 386. Most 386 motherboards didn't even support more than 16MB.

A dumb terminal doesn't even need a tenth of that.

It absolutely is slower. To an extreme degree even. It takes 10 to 20 seconds to load and is incredibly sluggish to use on some low-end machines I use regularly.

You may be thinking of UT99 or even the first Unreal. UT2k4 required a GPU and didn't have a software renderer.
