about
Hedge Fund -> Defense Industry -> Big Tech
My career has mostly been at the intersection of hardware and software (including a couple of years designing FPGA gateware) and focused on designing and developing correct, performant systems, but I've been paid to do everything from PCB design to React frontends.
I also have an interest in improving clinical trials for novel therapeutics.

That's a good point, my own studies have been biased towards the analytical side of mathematics, but I can definitely see how calculus could be less useful in other fields, e.g. I don't reme…

I agree completely, but calculus touches so much of advanced math that at some point you have to learn it in depth (assuming you actually want to learn advanced mathematics). I'd argue that linea…

I think Strang has some good points, and his advice is true for the majority of students who won't go on to use substantial amounts of mathematics or need to learn much math in the future. Howeve…

I enjoyed HPMOR (I read most of it a year or more ago, but haven't read the new stuff), but it seems Yudkowsky is spread a bit thin. The projects he's mentioned are all full time undertaking…

And related, why do people choose *BSD over Linux? (I'm genuinely interested, and not trying to start a flame war). I've used both OpenBSD and Linux on my personal computers, but only Linux …

I agree with most of this, however, I think rote memorization does have a role in education. For example, one of the current difficulties I'm facing as I get into more advanced mathematics is gap…

That's not the point though. The point Mark Cuban was making is that now people pitching VC firms compare their company to Uber or whatever, versus previously they were comparing it to AOL or Bro…
